Carl’s Jr. is hustling to stay relevant.
After introducing the vegan-but-seems-like-real-meat Beyond Burger in early 2019, the fast-food chain is stepping into even more avant-garde territory: namely, introducing a limited-time Cannabidiol (CBD) burger, just in time for 4/20.
Reportedly, the Carl’s Jr. “Rocky Mountain High: CheeseBurger Delight” will feature, "two beef patties topped with pepper jack cheese, Carl’s Jr’s 'Crisscut' waffle fries, pickled jalapenos and a signature 'Santa Fe Sauce' infused with 5 milligrams of CBD."
The burger will only be available for 24 hours on Saturday, April 20th at the Colorado Blvd. Denver location. Carl’s Jr. states this is because the state was the first to legalize recreational marijuana use back in 2014.
The CBD burgers cost, appropriately, $4.20.
Sales start at 6 a.m. and will be limited to customers 18 or older. You'll be able to buy two burgers per person while supplies last.
Is the Carl's Jr. CBD Burger Legal?
Cannabis-infused food and beverages have become increasingly popular in recent years. In fact, USA Today called it the hottest food trend of 2019.
However, eating a CBD burger - or drinking a CBD latte — will not get you high, but it allegedly will take the edge off. See, CBD only contains the non-psychoactive component of cannabis plants.
In December of 2018, Congress passed a farm bill making CBD products legal in most of the US. However, adding CBD to food products is still not permissible according to the FDA.
While the legal future of cannabis cooking at a commercial scale is still hazy, it hasn’t stopped chefs from experimenting. Still, Carl’s Jr. is decidedly bucking legal conventionality. Some business analysts suspect it may be because the chain is not publicly traded as opposed to competitors like Wendy’s and McDonald's.
Carl’s Jr. will be the first major fast-food chain to introduce a CBD food item to its menu, even if just for a day. But franchise executives say there could be a future for CBD at Carl’s Jr.
